An aquarium in a cave-like setting that is home to 2 turtles : a green turtle and a loggerhead turtle.
They share the pool with turbots, undulate rays, meagres…

 

The blue colours take us to a magical scene under the oceans !

The Paul Arné room, another temporary exhibition room, is on your left when you arrive on the 2nd level.

You will be in raptures when you see the stunning panoramic underwater view of the seal pool !
The seals swim and play in front of your very eyes…

 

You can even see them sleeping at the bottom of the pool !
Such entertaining and delightful creatures…

A truly historical collection with, among other displays, models and curios steeped in history that provide an emotional account of bygone times.

 

This room exhibits navigational instruments (octants, sextants, proportional compasses…), and provides information on how our forefathers used to fish for tuna and cod. Not forgetting the whalehunting that is such an integral part of the history of the Basque Country and especially of Biarritz.

This room was first opened in October 1973 before being renewed in 1992.

 

The setting is reminiscent of the inside of a boat and the display windows show navigational instruments and charts.

Skeletons and reconstructed models of cetaceans will delight all who are fascinated by whales, killer whales and dolphins.

 

Admire the whalebone, or baleen plates, the dolphin fins, the skull of a blue whale and its impressive jaws !

The Aquarium is 80 years old and yet he has not aged a bit !

 

At the end of the 19th century, the Marquis de Folin, captain of the port of Bayonne, wanted to create in Biarritz one of the first french centres of oceanography.

The Aquarium’s majestic eagle rays

The Aquarium's majestic eagle rays

 

The evocative name alone gives you an idea of the elegance and majestic appearance of these new residents at the Biarritz Aquarium ! The eagle rays (Myliobatis aquila) were brought from Valencia (Spain) by our aquarium managers and were first placed in the quarantine area so that they could receive the treatments necessary to their acclimatisation (and to give them a few tips on how to smile at the visitors !).
